Created based on Yemayá & Oshun. Yemaya is the Yoruba orisha of motherhood and the sea. She is the great mother of us all and represents Mother Earth, the life giver. As the patron of women, she is associated with the moon which has a powerful influence on women. Oshun, whose domain is freshwater and rivers, is referred to in some stories as either Yemayá's daughter or sister. These peices were created in honor of the two powerful deities to represent elements of the sun, moon, and water. The flying fish represents the Flying Fish Fellowship, a seasonal, all-immersive Afro-Indigenous, Afro-TransAtlantic-centered farming, herbalism, and homesteading program for BIPOC Vermonters to connect with the land, each other, and benevolent ancestors.

Genderqueer Gaia was created to represent a Mother Earth, motherhood, the various gender identities a part of the VT BIPOC community, and the Conscious Homestead urban farms & gardens which consists of organic vegetables, flowers, herbs and fruits grown from seed.

The food and herbs harvested from these gardens becomes free food for fellows, volunteers and mentees of the homestead, food for the free Community Care Shares that are dispersed to BIPOC in the community, ingredients for ancestral food cooking classes, herbs and botanicals for small batch products sold in the homestead’s Botanica and for Herbal Care Packages provided by Conscious Homestead.
