SOUP JOUMOU
Client: Amaris Castillo, Author | IG: @amariswriter
Medium: Illustration
Year: 2026I was commissioned by author Amaris Castillo to create an original digital illustration inspired by a story from her upcoming book, Bodega Stories — created for her snail mail campaign.
A Haitian woman with pink nails stirs a bubbling pot of Soup Joumou over an open flame, surrounded by butternut squash, plaintains, celery, carrots, and herbs. The kitchen pulses with Haitian cultural markers — an Ayiti mortar, Erzulie Dantor’s Vèvè on the wall, Toussaint Louverture on horseback, and a window opening onto the lush Haitian countryside.
