“SHE WHO WEEPS HEAVENLY BLUE, LOVE”

She Who Weeps Heavenly Blue, Love began as a private act of survival — a face conjured from grief, marked with a birthmark that belongs to the artist herself. She was made to hold what could not yet be spoken. In the years since, she has traveled, transformed, and found her way home to the walls of a social psychologist, theologian, keeper of the Black Madonna's flame.

Painted for Christena Cleveland, PhD, author of God is a Black Woman and The Black Madonna: Icon of Resistance and Nourisher of Souls, and founder of Black Madonna Freedom School, this mural is both arrival and offering: a weeping Madonna, blue as heaven. It was Christena who added the last word. Love.
